Buck with an extra antler

Postby timspawn » Thu Jul 15, 2010 6:25 pm

I checked my cameras last weekend and got a picture of this guy. He has an extra mainbeam on his right side.

Just as your fallow deer grows two antlers every year the whaitetail does the same. The main beam the antler that grows from the deers head and the points that grow off of it are tines. The tip of the main beam counts as a point as do each of the tines. Sometimes an extra beam will grow. Why? I dont know. This buck would be considered as "non typical" but not a trophy as he is most likely only 2.5 years old.

Quiet interesting, never seen it either.

Your deer don't grow big antlers in Florida, do they ?

The deer towards the West and North seem to have bigger racks ?

You are right. Our deer are smaller in body and rack size. But we still get some big ones once and awhile. We just dont have the genetics or proper food sources.
